Maastricht University

Maastricht University (UM) is an international university located Maastricht, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the Netherlands. UM is internationally renowned for its innovative educational methods, dynamic research portfolio, and its diverse, international population.

The city is known for the Maastricht Treaty, which established the European Union in 1992. The University occupies traditional buildings spread throughout the city-centre and its medical faculties are based in state-of-the-art facilities in Randwyck.

Internationalism
Maastricht is the most international and fully bilingual (Dutch & English) university in the Netherlands. Over 47 % of our students and 30 % of our academic staff come from abroad, together representing about 70 different countries. Every day you will encounter different languages and cultures, and most study programmes have a decidedly international theme.

For non-native English speakers, the English-language curriculum at UM will strengthen your command of the English language and prepare you for a career in an increasingly globalised world. Most of our programmes are taught entirely in English, the most widely used international language.

Each faculty at Maastricht University has dozens of international partnerships and student-exchange agreements, and we encourage interdisciplinary and international collaboration. In addition, UM programmes place heavy emphasis on studying abroad, often including it as a core requirement for graduation.

Innovative education and research
Maastricht University is known for its use of Problem-Based Learning, an innovative, student-centred instructional method, in its bachelor's and master's programmes. Students work in tutorial groups, collaboratively seeking practical solutions to open-ended, real-world problems. Instructors act as facilitators, giving help when and where it is needed, allowing you to build independence and develop research skills.

Research is integrated into every level of education at UM, and our research portfolio is focused on issues critical to the development of society. Each of our faculties has a set of priority research themes, and our policy of 'valorisation and enterprise' is dedicated to finding practical applications for our research output.

University of St Andrews

Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. By the middle of the sixteenth century the University had three colleges - St Salvator's (1450), St Leonard's (1511), and St Mary's (1538): the buildings of St Mary's College and St Salvator's Chapel both date from this period.

St Andrews is Scotland's first University and the third oldest in the UK. For almost six centuries, we have proudly upheld the tradition of academic excellence, attracting scholars of international repute and students from all over the world.

Today, we continue to offer the latest in teaching and research, all within a superbly picturesque mediaeval setting. Although St Andrews is not a campus University, it has grown and developed with the town and is now comfortably integrated.

The University provides an invigorating intellectual climate in which staff have close contacts with one another and with colleagues in other U.K. and overseas universities and research establishments. All Schools in both the sciences and the arts are actively involved in pushing back the frontiers of knowledge.

Physically the University is closely integrated with the town; the modern purpose-built library and many academic Schools are located centrally. The growth in physical and mathematical sciences has been accommodated at the North Haugh on the edge of St Andrews. A modern sports centre with adjacent playing fields and halls of residence are also located in this area.

St Andrews is relatively small, despite being a "city", with a basic population approaching 17,000. The University population (staff and students) numbers nearly 9,000. On average one in three people you see in the street have something to do with the University. You start to feel very quickly that you belong.

The University provides academic services, works with the private sector and considers itself part of a national and global network for the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge.
Zurich’s international reputation is based on groundbreaking research, particularly in molecular biology, brain research and anthropology, and on the work of the University Hospital and Veterinary Hospital.
The University’s researchers, lecturers and students benefit from the infrastructure that Zurich provides as a center of teaching and research. Apart from its own institutions, the University offers its members access to archive collections, libraries and the facilities of the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), as well as to the city’s private institutions. University of Liverpool

The University of Liverpool was one of the first civic universities. Founded in 1881 with the establishment of University College Liverpool, the College opened in 1882 with 45 students on Brownlow Hill.

The University's contribution to science has continued apace with present-day successes including the development of a new low-cost drug to treat malaria. Work is ongoing to develop an effective therapy for Pancreatitis, which afflicts 20,000 people each year in the UK alone. Research at the University has shed important light on the mechanisms involved in the disease.

Today, the University has over 230 first-degree courses offered across 103 subjects, over 19,000 registered students and an annual income of £219 million, which includes £75 million for research. The University remains strongly committed through the teaching and research of its staff to the 'advancement of learning and ennoblement of life' which the people of Liverpool helped establish over a century ago.

The University of Liverpool is one of the UK's leading universities. We are renowned for our teaching and research excellence. Our departments and schools are world-class and we have an outstanding reputation for student support.
As one of Merseyside's largest employers, the University is a major source for innovation and plays a key role in the economic development of the region in terms of employment, skills, research and technology.

The Liverpool of today is a changed city. It's emerging as one of the UK's leading centres for learning, culture, entertainment, sport and endeavour. The award of European Capital of Culture 2008 has confirmed this - and the University is at the heart of it all.
Shopping ranges from high street names to independent stalls, boutiques and high fashion. Places to eat and drink are on the increase, and there's something for everyone's taste and budget - Chinese, Indian, Italian, African, French, Japanese, Thai, Spanish, Mexican, Greek and more.

Liverpool is located on the North West coast of England, around 3 hours from London on the train. A vibrant, friendly city, Liverpool was chosen to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The city's waterfront has also been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our campus is in the heart of the city of Liverpool and includes student accommodation, academic departments, student welfare centre, doctor's surgery, Student Union, 2 main libraries, computer centres (with free internet access), shops, cafes and a newly extended sports centre.

Our students come from all walks of life and from over 120 countries to experience a truly rounded education.

We are preparing our graduates for the rest of their life.

At Durham, our students have direct access to some of the world’s finest academic minds – they learn how to learn and become self-starting, able to turn their hand to anything and make a difference in whatever field of endeavour they choose. Students are taught by leaders in their fields – people who themselves are making a difference through their research and teaching.

Whilst academic excellence is important, we recognise that academic success is only half the story – we encourage personal development and skills through participation in the widest variety of extracurricular activities. It is no surprise that our students are sought widely by employers and make their mark at national and international levels.

Durham welcomes the most talented students, whatever their background. Our student body comes from over 120 countries worldwide, an enriching experience for all. Competition for places is high: typically we receive about eight applications for every undergraduate place.
Nonetheless, we work hard to ensure that those students who will most benefit from the type of high quality education we offer can come to Durham.

Our undergraduate teaching combines traditional methods, such as personal tutorials, with the most advanced digital approaches. For example, we lead the UK’s only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for Active Learning in Computing. We seek to encourage student engagement where knowledge is obtained by sharing, problem-solving and creating. We generate innovative tools to support active learning techniques, revolutionising the learning environment to enable students to control the pace and style of their learning as well as to significantly enhance their employability.

The young
University of Groningen was already an outstanding example of an international community in the seventeenth century. Almost half of the students and lecturers came from outside the Netherlands .The founding of the University – at that time still a college of higher education – was an initiative taken by the Regional Assembly of the city of Groningen and the Ommelanden, or surrounding region. There were four faculties – Theology, Law, Medicine and Philosophy. The first 75 years of its existence were very fruitful for the University with about 100 students enrolling every year.

The University of Groningen (RUG: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) provides high-quality teaching and research, is internationally oriented, respects differences in ambition and talent, works actively with businesses, the government and the public, and is one of the top research universities in Europe .

The university offers a full range of academic degree programmes at Bachelor’s and Master’s level within ten faculties: Arts, Behavioural and Social Sciences, Economics, Law, Management & Organization, Mathematics & Natural Sciences, Medical Sciences, Philosophy, Spatial Sciences, Theology and Religious Studies.

English is the language of instruction for over 70 degree programmes. In addition, there is a wide variety of courses in English available for exchange students and a number of short certificate courses. Every year some 1,800 international students from over 95 countries find their way to our university. Nearly half of the 840 PhD students currently conducting research in
Groningen are international students.
